Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 30, 2026

What we collect

Account info: your email address, name, password (stored hashed, never in plain text), and date of birth (used only to confirm you meet the 18+ age requirement — see “Children’s privacy” below).

Golf profile: gender, handicap, club/equipment details, and profile photo, if you choose to add them.

Round and shot data: scores, putts, and other stats you enter for a round, plus GPS location while a round is in progress — used to show your distance to the green and to record where each shot was hit from. Under California law, precise geolocation is “Sensitive Personal Information” — see “California residents” below for how we handle it and your right to limit its use.

Social content: posts, comments, and chat messages you create, and photos you attach to them.

Friend connections: who you’re friends with, friend requests you send or receive, and players you’ve blocked.

Subscription status: whether you have an active Pro subscription and when it renews — billing itself is handled entirely by Apple or Google (see “Payment information” below); we never see or store your card details.

Push notification device token: if you turn on notifications, we store a device identifier (issued by Apple/Google/Expo, not tied to your identity on its own) so we can deliver alerts like friend requests, tee time invites, and subscription payment issues. No message content is stored beyond what’s needed to deliver that specific alert.

How we use it

To run the core features you’re using it for: tracking rounds, scoring, statistics, and course maps.

To show your round history and stats back to you, and to share what you choose to post with friends in the app.

Course data (hole layouts, par, yardage) comes from GolfAPI.io, a third-party golf course data provider — we send them a course lookup, not your personal data.

Course maps are rendered using Google Maps — your location is used only to draw your position on the map, not sent to Google beyond what’s needed to display it.

Payment information

If you subscribe to Golf Sage Pro, your purchase is processed entirely by the Apple App Store or Google Play — we never receive or store your card number or other payment details. Apple/Google notify us only that a subscription exists, its plan, and its renewal status, so we can grant Pro access to your account.

What we don't do

We don’t sell your data to anyone.

We don’t use any advertising or analytics tracking SDKs in the app.

We don’t share your rounds, posts, or location with anyone outside the app except the friends you connect with.

Where it's stored

App data is stored in a hosted Postgres database (Neon), located in the United States. Photos you upload are stored on our server. If you’re located outside the United States, your information is transferred to and processed in the United States, which may not have the same data protection laws as your country. By using Golf Sage, you consent to this transfer.

Cookies

The Golf Sage website uses one essential session cookie to keep you signed in — it’s required for login to work and isn’t used for tracking or advertising. We don’t use analytics or advertising cookies. The Golf Sage mobile app doesn’t use cookies; it stores your session securely on your device instead.

Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” signal. There’s no accepted industry standard for responding to it, so Golf Sage doesn’t currently respond to DNT signals — this doesn’t change anything described in this policy, since we don’t track you for advertising purposes regardless.

Data retention

We keep your data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account (see “Your controls” below), your profile, rounds, shots, clubs, posts, and comments are removed immediately — we don’t keep a backup copy beyond what’s needed briefly for fraud prevention or to comply with the law.

Your controls

You can make your profile private, choose whether your rounds post automatically, and block another player at any time, from Profile → Privacy & Sharing (or Friends, for blocking) in the app.

You can permanently delete your account and its data — your profile, rounds, shots, clubs, posts, and comments — at any time from Profile → Account → Delete Account. Rounds you shared with other players stay in their history, but your own data is removed. This can’t be undone.

You can turn push notifications off entirely from your device Settings, or choose which specific alerts you get (friend requests, tee time invites, billing alerts) from Profile → Notifications in the app. Deleting your account removes your device token along with everything else.

Children's privacy

Golf Sage requires everyone to be at least 18 to create an account (see the Terms of Service), and we ask for your date of birth at sign-up to enforce that. Golf Sage isn’t directed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us at info@golfsage.com and we’ll delete it.

California residents

Golf Sage doesn’t sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, so most California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA) opt-out rights don’t apply to anything we do. You still have the right to know what personal information we collect, request a copy of it, correct or delete it, and not be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights.

Precise geolocation is “Sensitive Personal Information” under the CPRA. We only use it to power the app’s own GPS/shot-tracking features while you’re playing — never for advertising, profiling, or any purpose beyond providing the service you’re using. You can limit its use at any time by turning off location access in your device settings, which disables those features.

To exercise any of these rights, see “Your controls” above or contact info@golfsage.com. We may need to verify your identity before processing a request.

Other US state residents

If you’re a resident of Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, or another state with a comprehensive consumer privacy law, you may have similar rights to access, correct, delete, and obtain a copy of your personal information, and to opt out of targeted advertising or profiling — none of which Golf Sage does. To exercise any of these rights, contact info@golfsage.com.

European (EU/UK/EEA) users

If you’re located in the European Union, United Kingdom, or European Economic Area, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and UK GDPR give you additional rights over your personal data, described below.

Legal basis for processing. We process your data based on: contractual necessity (to provide the app’s features you’ve signed up for), your consent (e.g. location access, which you grant and can withdraw through your device settings), and legitimate interests (e.g. account security and fraud prevention), as applicable to each use described in this policy.

Your rights. You have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data; restrict or object to certain processing; receive your data in a portable format; and withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent. See “Your controls” above for how to exercise most of these directly in the app, or contact info@golfsage.com for anything else.

International transfers.Golf Sage is a US-based company and stores data in the United States, as described in “Where it’s stored” above. By using the app, you understand your data will be transferred to and processed in the US.

Right to complain. If you believe we haven’t handled your data properly, you can lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority, in addition to contacting us directly.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app changes. Material changes will be reflected here with a new “Last updated” date; continuing to use the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
